Dark Shadows

Girl: How could I miss the movie when there's Deppy the great! This is the 8th time Johnny Depp is working with Tim Burton. At first, I wasn't a fan of this sort of dark movies. "Sweeney Todd" was the film that kinda made me start to adapt to the style.

Dark Shadows was better than I expected! The trailer was a little cheesey at first, but the actual film was great. Funny and witty lines, unique characters, old-school tunes and beyond awesome acting from depp. I think this is probably my favourite Depp & Tim Burton collaboration!

Cabin In The Woods

Boy: If not for the 'noise' created by our friend, we wouldn't know much about this movie. The fact that many relate this movie to 'SAW' kind of irks me because I'm fearing I'll be watching another movie that simply focus on the gruesome scenes. 'Cabin in the Woods', who would have thought it's such a horrifying movie? Definitely not me.

To be honest, I don't know how to feel for this movie. There's a variety of scenes - some make you laugh, some make you feel disgusting and some simply just bore the crap out of you. The whole movie simply revolves around the woods. Most of the story makes complete no sense, probably it's for the sake of moving the movie on.

Gruesome scenes exist and it's pretty much lame on some portion, especially when you see a wide variety of monsters. I'm not a fan of this movie per se but for a movie with such twists, it doesn't fancy me any bit at all.

The Avengers

Girl: Much anticipated film for 2012! The big blockbuster which gathers the mightiest heroes, including favorites such as Captain America, Thor, Iron man and Hulk. Among all the heroes, my favourite got to be Iron Man (mostly because of the actor himself) but my personal favourite hero movie still got to be Thor. Well that's if you exclude the X-Men series.

To be honest, I was kind of afraid that it will end up disappointing us instead. Especially when there was SO MUCH expectations and hype about it since the very first day. But it's true, it is good. Even better with the Gold Class Treatment (gosh, where can I buy that chair?!).

It was witty with humor and captivating at the same time. But I was kinda lost mid-way, couldn't catch up with their dialogues. But after a while, you know the gist. Heroes vs Bad Guys. Heroes must kill Bad Guys to save the earth, not very difficult aye?

But to be frank, I think the film featured a tad too much on Iron Man. Since he's probably everyone's favourite - rich, charismatic and attractive. But, I'm not complaining!

The Vow

Girl: Knowing that there's Rachel McAdams in the show, I knew I had to catch it. & there have been waves of raves for the show way before it was due to screen so naturally we had the expectations for it. Especially so when its inspired by a true event.

It was a joy watching the pairing of Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, they look so cute together! It was romantic, alluring and an inspiration for couples to watch. I especially love this quote from the movie, which I sometimes still recall now and then.

"I chose to stay for all the things he did right and not for the one thing he did wrong."

Thought the ending could be done better though, it seemed a tad too abrupt for me and it is a pity *spoiler alert* that Paige didn't regain her memory. On a random note, I kind of like the name Paige. Name for the second girl? ;)

Gone

Boy: Amanda Seyfried. What can I say about her. Her role in the movie 'Time' has deeply impressed me. She's one of the actress whom can really act and I must say, plus her nice figure and strong character appeal, she's the one to watch for.

The movie couldn't find a better actress than her. Casting her as a main cast truly bring out the essence of this movie. The thriller brings me the suspense I've have always craved for and the trailer simply just put a stop to the speculation and make me put this movie under my 'wanted' list.

True enough, she did not disappoint. A pity the running time was shorter and more could have been done to elaborate on the ending.

A nice thriller full of suspense. The flow of the story was nice, on how she ended up standing by what she believe while others simply just think of her as a lunatic because of her dark past.

Really, it could have been a far better movie:-
- More could have been told on her past
- More could have been told on her relationship with her sister
- More could have been told on what the suspect is like and his profile along with criminal history
- More could have been done to elaborate what happen at the end

Nevertheless, despite the lack of the above-mentioned, it was a well portrayed movie and thumbs up for her effort. Probably because too much focus was on her, the running time shortened and hence, lack of elaboration on the rest.

Wrath of the Titans

Girl: I've always been a fan of Grecian and gods kind of movie. The stories never fail to intrigue me. Wrath of the Titans didn't disappoint me, in fact I thought it was better than Clash of the Titans. Love the execution and special effects especially the part on the 100 doors. But some part of the story plot was a bit lame, like the ending part. In fact I found it a bit gay. But still, I enjoyed the film pretty much.

The Hunger Games

Girl: The Hunger Games wasn't the must-watch film for me but since it was showing on the Grand Cathay that week, we gave it a shot. It was pleasantly quite a good catch, I like the interesting concept of each district fighting out and eventually having one winner. The most interesting part has to be the rules, having sponsors helping you when you're at wit's end. Found it a tad draggy though. But overall, pretty good.

A Simple Life

Girl: When i first read about the story's synopsis in the papers, I told the boy i want to watch this film. Especially after it won bags of awards. I was not particularly keen to watch Andy Lau's performance in this film but more of Deanie Ip instead. It was indeed a simplistic plot, aptly portraying a simple life between a household maid and the family she loyally took care of all her life. I like how the movie didn't emphasize on the teary, emotional bits (which is easy to create with plots like this) but instead slotted in simple humor, very humanistic touch and words that you and I would say and do to the people dear to us. & Deanie Ip acted superly as Tao Jie. Many times, I could see my own mother in her. & I'm sure many of you can as well.

Act of Valor

Boy: It wasn't easy persuading the girl to watch this movie with me. Finally, she gave in. Having watch 'Special Forces', I'm growing to love such genre of moving and in the process of making sure the girl loves them too.

It's possibly more on the behind the scenes of the fight against evil or terror that touches the heart of us, allowing us to know how the good can fight and win against the bad, It's by no chance easy and it's precisely how this movie is going to educate us on though. Success of such fight isn't easy but when successful, we can totally feel them. I'm definitely excited on how the whole movie will be done up, especially when they are casting real and active duty agents in this movie. Simply can't wait.


Girl: At first, I was a little hesitant to watch this boyish-type of war movies even though I personally like action packed films. Just not sure if i'll be able to appreciate army, soldiers, that kinda stuff. In addition, it was only showed in Golden Village and I hate watching movies anywhere else except Cathay. I don't know why can people be fans of GV, Shaw etc when they have terrible seats and arrangement. Especially Shaw!

The movie surprised me because it was quite realistic and there's many fanciful gadgets to eye-feast on. A lot of details went into the plot and it was an exciting, action-packed film that didn't lose that element of realism. The bond between soldiers and relationships between them and their families was relatable. It was so good, I recommended my dad to watch it!

The Iron Lady

Girl: I just did some dumbbell exercises and my hands are aching. Haha, random I know. Anyway, we finally caught a movie after...2-3 weeks of hard work and much lesser time together due to the boyfriend's peak period. Now that he has left that place for greener pastures and have a whopping 3 weeks break, we made use of the time we have together to catch up on things we love best.

I suggested watching The Iron Lady since I was keen in the story since I heard about it. & the fact that Meryl Streep won best actress the night before at Oscars reaffirmed my decision.

To be honest, I think the plot is so-so. I think they emphasized too much on her fragility when she was old and played down on her glorious days as the only female prime minister in Britain. I much enjoyed watching her speak (in her very very charismatic style) and debate as compared to her mumbling and hallucinating in her later days.

That being said, I think Meryl Streep's performance was superbly outstanding! She was no doubt the perfect star to play that role. & I think she outweighed the whole plot with her splendid performance. Totally deserved her Oscars!

龙众舞 - Dance Dance Dragon

Boy: To be honest, the only thing attracted me to this movie has got to be Auntie Lucy. But the point of the plot revolving around this baby really got me ready to park my money on this movie, with much hesitation as usual. Locally produced movies has never failed to disappoint since eons ago. And I presume it's the same yet again this time round. From the cast, I could expect some lame portions but I definitely hope the baby and Aunty Lucy can direct the movie to a more humorous rather than a lame one.

Quite rightly enough, this show is nothing short of the word 'LAME'. And what actually surprises me is the fact that someone whom I expect would make this film better, made this movie WORST. Instead, Auntie Lucy actually make me feel disgusted with 'her' touchy moves and yucky gestures. Desperation is the only word I can describe Auntie Lucy.

Throughout the whole movie, it's pretty much trying to get the viewers to laugh out loud. Plot sucks big time as there isn't any purpose at all and when the movie ends, you finally let out a relief sign. Phew.

Special Forces

Boy: At the back of my mind, this seems like a typical war movie to be, but what entice me is that fact that Special Forces was engaged instead of the typical Military Army we have seen so forces. Liken the idea of Special Forces from this movie to the SWAT mean we commonly have known, that is what really interest me. Imagine this, timing, teamwork, skills as well as sharpshooter shots, what do you expect more? Not often we get to see such shows, generally in Singapore. The sneaks preview were out one week prior but the fact that this movie is in both French and English (with a little bit of some Arabic or Afgan language) doesn't turn me off. We all have watched Korean movies yet not knowing what they were talking about but really, thank god for the lyrics.

Interestingly, the whole story revolves around a particular person. Saving this one and only person and yet most actually died in trying to save her alive seems to be an easy yet difficult tasks. The movie could have easily end, if not for the insertion of certain interruption to their amazingly thought plan. Sad to say, there aren't as many potrayal of the essence of Elite Special forces and what surprises me is the fact that there were more touching scenes than you can ever imagine. And yet, these touching moments did not ruin what the story is trying to tell. It typically brings me right in the shoes of those who fought in the movie, or even those actual warriors who fought in the Afgan war. War spares no one. Terror continues. It brings a new light to those who were new to that and brings a perspective to those who thought they understand. The only sad thing is the ending, just so I thought, until a minor twist changed it.

War Horse

Boy: Seriously, I don't know what attracted me to this movie that made me want to watch it. Perhaps such movies are hard to come by, as compared to action movie. Frankly speaking, the genre itself was hard to be categorize, as many would actually relate it to the genre of 'drama'.

By the name of it, all that was running through my mind the journey this special horse had went through. Perhaps, there's an emotional attachment of it that draws me to this movie.

Rather weirdly, the movie did not run the way I thought it would be, yet it was interesting how the horse made its way to the warfield. Yet, the journey of this war horse was quite elaborated, or rather, too elaborated, that it turned draggy.

Apart from that, I thought the movie failed to instill extra story on the bond the first owner has with the war horse. To me, this war horse was portrayed as a product that was passed around the hands of few owners before it's touchingly back to its first owner.

One special element of this movie was the fact that it did attempt to capture the heart of the viewers with its touching scenes, especially on how the horse reconciled with its first (and possibly favourite) owner once again. But that's also probably the only thing that worth waiting for...but the process could possibly be too 'damaging' for those who can't tolerate a slow movie. Unless you're a true blue horse lover, if not, this movie's definitely not for you.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Boy: Robert Downey Jr was already impressing with so many of the movies that he had acted, especially in the first series of Sherlock Holmes where he successfully depicted the role extremely well. His composure was cleverly portrayed and with a little tinge of humour, Sherlock Holmes became the master detective that everyone wants to watch.

I can safely say this movie was a long awaited one. Afterall, to continue from the first series, something brilliant has to come up to entice the forever full of expectations viewers and in this case, a loyal fan of Robert Downey Jr. The preview did not disappoint as it shows up a rival of Sherlock Holmes, someone as brilliant or not, much more scheming than him. And so, we booked our movie to this 'battle of the wits' on the first day of the slot.

A pity Irene Adler (acted by Rachel McAdams) died early into the movie. I was expecting her to continue her witty love with Sherlock Holmes but sadly, it did not. Nevertheless, having said that, a character has risen to lock wits ends with Sherlock Holmes. Of course, a whole new continuation of jokes between Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson was a whole new level of humour. Spoiler: His failure at marriage did allow Dr John Watson (acted by Jude Law) to continue as his partner.

One good thing about this movie is that it portray brilliantly the way Sherlock Holmes paid his attention to details, and I really mean simple details. Coupled that with the slow motion display of selected scenes, especially the portion where two sides were locked in a gun-shooting battle. Simply amazing as I can see how graphics as well as digital platform were heavily used in this movie.

It's definitely hard to tell the results of the suspense because both guys were equally brilliant and eager to outlast each other but the ending definitely makes me eager for a third instalment of the movie already.
Spoiler: All because Sherlock Holmes performed a comeback to life in what seem to be a dead legend prior.

Girl: It was definitely a must watch all because of ROBERT DOWNEY JR! I only noticed him after Iron Man and found him extremely charismatic, the same kind of aura that Depp gives. The first installment of Sherlock Holmes is named as one my favourite-st movie of all times so I had to be one of the first to catch a game of shadows.

I love the straight face witty humor from Holmes and how he intelligently pieces all the puzzles together to solve a difficult case. I don't feel particularly comfortable with the seemingly bromance with Dr Watson but I think many girls find it cute. Kudos to the team for playing with slow motion and interesting camera angles as well.

Know what's my favourite part? The last one minute of the show :)

Mission Impossible 4

Tom Cruise, definitely the charming man lost for quite some time in the Hollywood scene. Not much impression of the rest of the previous series of Mission Impossible as a result, but definitely one to look forward to because it's Tom Cruise. What else do you expect. Someone as charming as him, plus the fact that he did some of the stunts himself in this movie would already justify the amount you paid to watch this movie.

Somehow, the movie poster reminds me of a particular Sci-Fi game which I can't recalled the name, but however, having said that, the poster was kind of 'treated' to achieve a more animated effect I reckon.

Definitely looking forward to this movie once again and I must say, a 4th series now is not easy because expectations are set to rise and Tom Cruise definitely have a hard time pleasing people like us. 

 

I don't remember myself being a huge fan of the Mission Impossible series before this, maybe I wasn't that appreciative of action packed movies and tech gadgets then. But I'm pretty impressed by this one. Now, I find myself develop a strong liking for clever movies with cool gadgets - the "screen" was one of the coolest agent gadget I've ever come across in any films! damn cool to play with the iris detector technology.

The film also improved my impression of Tom Cruise. Even though he's short and a little crazy (think jump chair scene..), he is indeed still very much charming and well..handsome. & kudos to him for not using any doubles in the film. How did he even managed to overcome the heights on the Dubai tower! shudders.

Already Famous

I'm usually not a fan of local movies ever since Jack Neo begun producing too many movies that has become quite a lame and boring trend. So lame, I concluded that local movies can't do big. But it was until Michelle Chong constant appearance on TV shows and her being as a TV personality that impressed me, forcing me to temporarily put aside the condemning and give local movie a chance, afterall, it's her first movie where she partake the role of directing, script writing and acting as well.

The movie was full of jokes and of course, the appearance of 小鬼 got most of the girls in the theater going Ga-Ga! WTH. There was even a temporary moment of 'WHOA' across the theater. Good job from Michelle Chong on this movie I must say. Nevertheless, simple movie plot with expected ending. Cast chosen however was kind of out of what I've expected but definitely the right choice of cast.A nice try for a first-timer and subsequently, every of her movie is definitely a worth and must to watch. 100 points for her determination, sheer hard work and of course, talent.

Breaking Dawn Part 1

The entire Twilight series had a special meaning for us both, and we caught all the series so far together, even though to her, the movie wasn't very amazing. This movie has along been very much a battle between Edward and Jacob and it all brings us back to how me and the girl would tussle each other hands in the theater whenever the then heart-trob Edward appeared. And Bella, the centre of both attraction & attention, would appear at the most random times leaving everyone thinking who she really love.

It wasn't until the last movie which clearly showed where her heart's with, sadly. I'm definitely a fan of Jacob, also because based on the fact that he's a werewolf and I love seeing such great beast effect in the movie.

To be honest, I'm more and more disgusted by the fact that people actually do think I look like that vampire, which is seriously ugly to me. His pale face, rosy red lips and think cheek line is making me turn-off. Therefore, I'm definitely a supporter of Jacob in this movie. On a whole, a disappointing movie for part 1. Probably because of the fact that they wanted to split this movie into two parts (copy cat, from Harry Potter 7 of course), they made the first part a real draggy one.

Like most said, it was a gruesome movie with blood, pregnancy and a highly wet one due to all the smooching between Edward and Bella. Other than that, nothing much I could say about this movie. And now, it's the wait for next part and if I'm not wrong, it's quite a wait before it's due to be released. Oh, what a disappointment.

Girl: Somehow, I like this installment better than the first because its more colourful, shows a more "human" side to them and more relatable. I particularly love the wedding march in and the song in the background, seriously sweet (but bella can definitely afford to smile more). Edward is getting uglier, sadly. But I still think the bf reminds me alot of him, because of the eyebrows i feel. Jacob is looking gooood. I used to think he's ugly but i now think otherwise. & I think it's damn sweet of him to always be at Bella's side as an onlooker, making sure she's not hurt and always protected. Lucky girl. Can't wait for part 2 (yes, I used the words can't wait) because I reckon there'll be more action from the vampire tribes..... anyway, how do u pronounce the baby girl's name again?

Kaiji 2

When I learned of this sequel , I only had one fear, that is might not be as good it the first one. All because there ain't much hype surrounding this, like how there were for Death Note. It wasn't until one week prior where I started hearing and seeing everything about Kaiji two. Even Tatsuya came to Singapore to promote this movie and create a whole lot of funny jokes.

I remembered how the first part was, and distinctively, the bridge gamble. A very intelligent first part reminded me how I simply cannot afford to miss this sequel, just in case it's going to be as awesome or if not, much more better than the first part.

I'm purely just looking forward to the tricks, the intelligence and of course, how the whole wonderful plot can be carved out intelligently over a giant Pachinko machine.

No doubt, it's one of 'clever' movie I've watched. I must say, the Manga writers in Japanese must be filled with creative brain juice. It's interesting how they tweak a game of gamble in so many ways that little details of the movie have to be appreciated.

I would have expected more nitty gritty though but I reckon the actress took over it. Seriously, by the looks on how it ends, I'm definitely hoping for a third part.

Immortals

Not a huge fan of Greek gods, with names that looks so powerful such as Zeus, Aries etc. But the girl was surprisingly in love with such movies. Yes, a vast difference of what sort of movie I thought she would like.

Indeed, 300 left a relatively good impression with me, but having said that, I wasn't expecting much for this movie because I never believe in a good movie created by the producers from a good movie (300 in this case). Nevetheless, we went ahead and watch of course.

All I can say is this movie is full of gore - chopping heads off, piercing through bodies, blood bursting into the air as though it's waterfall gushing through a narrow river bank. Other than that, it doesn't tell much about the immortals. Instead, it's the mortal that reigns the movie and certain, it cast a disappointment in me. As expected, the colour scheme used in this movie were heavily adapted from what it was back in the movie '300'.

I guess I ought to take note the next time a movie is showing and it says 'from the producers of immortals'. LOL

You Are The Apple Of My Eye

Taiwanese movie. We hardly came cross Taiwanese movie. All that I can remember vividly from that country of origin are the pop as well as idol dramas which I hardly catches. And it's possibly because of that, I do not have knowledge of the cast as well as the director.

Hear so much raves about this movie and a determined girlfriend left me with 'no choice' but to catch this movie. Romance movie in Chinese? Oh ya, it's been a long time

It's a typical movie where it pulled me back to one decade ago, where I'm still a student, liking and having crushes on fellow classmates and having eye candy all around. It definitely bring back certain memories and no doubt, a touching yet funny movie which I really love it.
